I often hear older people saying that they don’t like technology or aren’t interested. “It is too complicated” or “I am too old”. Then there are many others who have the technology but are just too afraid to use it.
You don’t see the same fear in young children. They are keen to explore and interact.
I have observed young babies who have never been “allowed” to use touch screens but they instinctively work it out. Often they have seen the grown ups and older siblings using them so they know exactly what to do!
When I am introducing an ipad to someone who is wary of using technology I start off by getting them used to using a touch screen.
It’s a Free app for an ipad (there are similar apps for android – see links at bottom of blog post
Izen describes itself as a light and music relaxation app.
In my opinion it is far more than that and very simple to use.
| What does it do ?
|
What do I love about it?
It is easy and fun for adults and children of all ages and abilities.
Relaxing music – ( this can be turned down if it annoys you)
Creative
Mesmerizing patterns (great for maths explorations too!)
Interactive – responds to your touch.
It is non verbal – this is another reason which makes it an ideal introduction to the use of a touch screen for those with communication issues.
It does not rely on language but promotes interaction with others
Can be used by more than one person – I create wonderful patterns with my son
Allows you to swipe, tap, double tap, hold and let go.
Allows the therapist to observe finger movements ,
The therapist can demonstrate how to move your finger and gives visual feedback.
Responds to those who may not be able to lift their finger off.
I have seen people living with dementia who are generally unresponsive to most attempts at reciprocal interaction literally “come alive” in response to this app. Sitting up, showing interest, smiling, looking at me, taking a turn. This may not happen for everyone but it has been amazing to witness when it does !
(If you want to turn adverts off you can pay to upgrade to an advert free version.
Or just try turning the Wi-Fi off when you play....)
Other users have found the photo option hard to use.
This is one of the few apps that I like everything about as a therapist.
I could play on this for hours and find it really relaxing !
There are lots of other apps which offer interaction to touch. Here are a few :
Pocketpond2
Gravitarium
Hypnoglyph
Fingerpaint magic
Doodledandy
Don't have an iPad ?
There are similar apps on Google Play for android tablets, e.g.
· Pocketpond
· Fun with Particles
· Particle Fountain
This is a good article for introducing an ipad to an older person.
